LEG ULCERS & NONHEALING WOUNDS

A WOUND THAT WON’T HEAL NEEDS ATTENTION.

A sore on your leg, foot, or toe that stays open may be a warning sign of poor circulation.

Your skin needs a steady supply of oxygen-rich blood to heal. When circulation is reduced, even a small cut or blister can become a slow-healing or non-healing wound.

HOW NONHEALING WOUNDS DEVELOP

Why a Small Wound Can Become a Big Problem

01

SKIN IS
INJURED

A cut, blister, pressure point, or small sore damages the skin.

02

HEALING
SLOWS

Poor arterial flow or diabetes can interfere with normal healing.

03

THE WOUND STAYS OPEN

Without enough oxygen and healthy tissue repair, the wound may deepen or grow.

04

COMPLICATIONS DEVELOP

Untreated ulcers can become infected & may lead to serious tissue damage.

04

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

For selected wounds, HBOT increases oxygen delivery to support tissue repair and healing.

05

Advanced Tissue Support

Skin grafts or biologic substitutes may help deeper or difficult-to-heal wounds close.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Why is my leg wound not healing?

Several conditions can interfere with wound healing.

Poor arterial circulation may reduce oxygen reaching the tissue. Venous disease can cause swelling and pressure around the wound. Diabetes can also affect circulation, sensation, and healing.

A vascular evaluation can help determine what is contributing to your wound.

Warning signs may include a cold foot, leg pain while walking or at rest, changes in skin color, numbness, weak circulation, or a wound on the foot or toes that is slow to heal.

Testing can determine whether an artery is narrowed or blocked.

If poor arterial circulation is preventing oxygen-rich blood from reaching the wound, restoring blood flow may improve the conditions needed for healing.

Depending on the blockage, treatment may include angioplasty or atherectomy.

An arterial ulcer develops when not enough blood reaches the tissue.

A venous ulcer develops when blood does not return efficiently through the veins, causing increased pressure and swelling in the lower leg.

Because treatment differs, identifying the cause is important before deciding on a treatment plan.

Not necessarily.

Many vascular causes of nonhealing wounds can be evaluated and treated using minimally invasive procedures. The exact treatment depends on the cause and severity of the wound.

HBOT involves breathing oxygen in a pressurized chamber. This increases the amount of oxygen available to tissues and may support healing in selected chronic or difficult wounds.

Severe wounds associated with critically reduced circulation, infection, or significant tissue damage can become limb-threatening.

This is why wounds that continue to worsen or fail to heal should be evaluated promptly.

Medicare and many insurance plans may cover medically necessary wound care, diagnostic testing, and vascular treatment.

Coverage depends on your diagnosis, treatment, and individual plan. Our team can verify your benefits before treatment.

High Cholesterol Is Not Just a Heart Problem. What It Is Doing to the Arteries in Your Legs | HVLC

When someone gets a high cholesterol result, the conversation almost always goes the same direction: heart disease risk, statins, diet changes, and keeping an eye on blood pressure. All of that is appropriate. But there is something consistently missing from that conversation. The same cholesterol buildup that narrows the arteries near your heart does the exact same thing to the arteries supplying your legs. And for a lot of patients managing high cholesterol, nobody has told them that.

Knee Pain at Night: Why It Gets Worse When You Stop Moving | HVLC Bakersfield

Knee Pain at Night: Why It Gets Worse When You Stop Moving and What It Could Mean Most people expect joint pain to get worse during activity. Push it too hard, feel it afterward. That logic makes sense. So when knee pain is worst at night, when you are lying still, not putting any weight on it, not doing anything at all, it catches people off guard. Some assume they slept in a bad position. Others take a painkiller and try to push through. What fewer people know is that nighttime knee pain has a specific meaning. It is not random. It is telling you something about what is driving the pain, and it points directly toward a mechanism that standard treatments often miss.

What Happens to Your Legs When You Sit All Day. And Why It Matters More Than You Think sitting all day effects on leg circulation poor circulation vascular health Bakersfield Most people know that sitting too much is not great for them. They have heard it enough times. But the conversation usually stays vague, centered around back pain, posture, or burning calories. What gets far less attention is what prolonged sitting does specifically to the blood flow in your legs. And for a significant number of people, particularly those with diabetes, high blood pressure, or a family history of heart disease, the effects are not just discomfort. They are the early stages of a real vascular problem.
