You glance down at your ankles and something seems off. There’s brown staining you swear wasn’t there before, or the skin just looks darker.
You’ve probably noticed it for weeks, maybe months. Figured it was age, dry skin, something random. But what if it’s not random at all?
Ankle discolouration often points to circulation issues. And while it might seem minor now, it’s worth understanding what’s actually happening under your skin.
Most often, ankle discoloration has a clear meaning that the blood flow isn’t right; the veins may be struggling to push blood back up to your heart.
Or it can be that your arteries are so narrow that not enough blood is getting down there.
Your ankles get hit first because they’re the lowest point! Gravity’s working against you. When circulation starts to fail, that’s where you’ll notice.
What causes it:
It looks different on everyone. Some people get brown or rust patches. Others see purple or red. Sometimes it’s just darker skin overall in that area.
Blood is pooling where it shouldn’t. When it sits in your leg tissue, iron leaks out and leaves those brown stains. If oxygen isn’t reaching your skin properly, that darkens things too.
It starts small, usually. A spot. Maybe two. You probably won’t even notice right away. Then months go by and it’s spread.
The skin gets weird too; it is thicker, tougher, and has a different texture.
The colour change is rarely the only thing happening. Your legs are probably doing other weird stuff.

If you’ve got a few of these, get it looked at.
Not everything needs a doctor’s visit immediately. But circulation issues can get worse.
Get checked if:
Vascular problems don’t get better on their own. They get worse. What looks like nothing now can become ulcers or wounds that won’t close.
People end up with really serious problems that could’ve been stopped early.
There are treatments, and they’re not as bad as you think. We’re not talking about huge operations.
Depending on what’s wrong, you might need:
Earlier is better. The sooner you deal with it, the easier it is to treat.
Those marks on your ankles might not hurt. They might not even bug you that much. But they’re usually a sign your circulation needs help, and soon.
We see this all the time at Heart Vascular & Leg Center. PAD, vein problems, and circulation issues are treated with methods that are as non-invasive as we can make them.
We’re trying to stop small problems before they turn into big concerns.
If you’re looking at your ankles and something seems wrong, come in. We’ll figure out what it is and what you should do about it.
Is brown discolouration around ankles always serious?
Not always, but it usually means your veins or circulation aren’t working right. Better to know than guess.
Can ankle discolouration be reversed?
Sometimes. Fix the circulation problem, and the skin might improve. But if it’s been there a long time, some staining stays.
How quickly should I see a doctor?
If it’s new or spreading, then don’t wait forever! If you’ve got open sores, pain, or it looks infected, go now.
Does the discolouration hurt?
Not usually by itself.
Can I just ignore it if it doesn’t bother me?
You can try. But vascular problems get worse over time. What’s small now could be a much bigger problem later.
