IVC Filter Placement – Protecting Against Dangerous Blood Clots

IVC (Inferior Vena Cava) filter placement is a minimally invasive procedure designed to prevent life-threatening pulmonary embolism (PE) by catching blood clots before they reach the lungs. The IVC filter is a small, metal device inserted into the inferior vena cava—the large vein that carries blood from the lower body to the heart. This treatment is typically recommended for patients at high risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) who cannot take blood thinners or have had blood clots despite anticoagulation therapy.

At Heart Vascular and Leg Center, our expert team specializes in IVC filter placement and removal, ensuring effective blood clot prevention while prioritizing patient safety. If you are at risk for DVT or PE, schedule a consultation today to explore the best treatment options for your vascular health

IVC Filter Placement Procedure

At Heart Vascular and Leg Center, we prioritize your safety and comfort throughout the IVC filter placement process. Our experienced vascular specialists will guide you through every step, ensuring you feel informed and prepared. Here’s how you can get ready for the procedure:

  • Discuss your medical and family history with your specialist.

  • Provide a detailed list of any medications and supplements you take.

  • Inform your doctor about any known allergies, especially to contrast dye or anesthesia.

  • Pause blood-thinning medications before your procedure, as advised.

  • Do not eat or drink for at least 6 hours prior to treatment.

  • Arrange for a trusted friend or family member to drive you home after the procedure.

Candidates for IVC Filter Placement

If you have PAD and an increased risk of blood clots, IVC filter placement may be the right option, especially if you:

  • Have deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or a history of recurrent blood clots

  • Are at high risk of pulmonary embolism (PE)

  • Cannot take blood thinners due to medical conditions

  • Have developed blood clots despite using anticoagulants

  • Recently underwent major surgery, trauma, or prolonged bed rest

Benefits of IVC Filter Placement

For PAD patients at risk of clot-related complications, IVC filter placement offers a safe and effective way to prevent serious health issues. Key benefits include:

  • Prevents life-threatening pulmonary embolism

  • Minimally invasive with no major incisions or scarring

  • Quick outpatient procedure with a faster recovery

  • Alternative for PAD patients who cannot take blood thinners

  • Can be removed when no longer needed

How is an IVC Filter Placement Performed?

Our vascular specialists use a patient-first approach to ensure a safe and effective procedure. Here’s what happens during the treatment

  • Local Anesthesia & Sedation – To maximize comfort, we administer local anesthesia and mild sedation to help you stay relaxed during the procedure.
  • Catheter Insertion –  A small incision is made in the neck or groin, and a thin catheter is guided into the inferior vena cava (IVC)—the large vein that carries blood from the lower body to the heart. Using fluoroscopy (real-time X-ray imaging), our specialists carefully position the catheter.
  • Filter Placement –  The IVC filter, a small metal device designed to catch blood clots, is deployed within the vein.  Once placed, the filter expands and attaches to the vein walls, preventing large clots from reaching the lungs while still allowing normal blood flow.
  • Final Imaging & Catheter Removal –  Most patients go home the same day and can resume light activities within 24 to 48 hours, If a temporary filter is used, a follow-up appointment will be scheduled to remove it safely once the risk of blood clots decreases.

IVC Filter Placement Recovery Time

After your IVC filter placement, you will rest in a monitored recovery area for a few hours before being discharged. Mild bruising, soreness, or discomfort at the catheter insertion site is common and typically resolves within a few days. Most patients can resume light activities within 24-48 hours, but we recommend avoiding heavy lifting and strenuous exercise for about 1-2 weeks to promote proper healing. Follow-up appointments will be scheduled to monitor the filter’s placement and discuss potential removal if needed.

What to Expect After IVC Filter Placement?

Recovery after Inferior Vena Cava (IVC) filter placement is generally quick, with most patients resuming normal activities within a day or two. However, ongoing care is essential to prevent complications and ensure optimal vascular health

To reduce the risk of blood clots, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is crucial. This includes staying active, following a balanced diet, staying hydrated, and, if prescribed, taking anticoagulant medications as directed. If you notice any unusual symptoms such as leg swelling, chest pain, or difficulty breathing, contact your healthcare provider immediately.
