Holter Monitor

A Holter monitor is a small, wearable heart monitor that records your heart’s activity continuously over 24–48 hours (or longer). It helps your provider detect heart rhythm problems that may not appear during a short in-office test.

The Holter monitor is a portable EKG device connected to small electrodes placed on your chest. You wear it while going about your normal daily activities, allowing your provider to see how your heart behaves throughout the day and night.

A Holter monitor may be ordered to:

  • Detect irregular heart rhythms (arrhythmias)
  • Evaluate palpitations, dizziness, or fainting
  • Monitor heart rate over time
  • Assess how well heart medications are working
  • Investigate symptoms that come and go
  • Small adhesive electrodes are placed on your chest
  • The monitor is worn on a belt or shoulder strap
  • You’ll be asked to keep a simple activity and symptom diary
  • After the monitoring period, you return the device to be analyzed

No. Wearing a Holter monitor is painless. Some patients notice mild skin irritation from the adhesive, which goes away after removal.

Yes. You can walk, work, and sleep as usual. You’ll need to avoid bathing or swimming unless you are given a waterproof device.

Your provider will review the recorded data and discuss the results with you, usually within a few days.
